Weather Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Tobacco Products Forced Closure of Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
